Family visit: From olive tree to oil bootle
Riudecanyes is a small village of just over 1,100 inhabitants, located 15 km from Reus.
This place of Baix Camp is located in the inland of the region, an area dominated mainly by olive groves.
Riudecanyes is well known for the cultivation of the Arbequina olive tree and for the quality of its oil. Most of its people live off from this traditional activity. Both the cultivation of the olives and the production of the oil are done according to the criteria of the Siurana DO, a designation that guarantees the highest quality of the product.
To get to know the world of the olive tree and olive oil with your family, we propose this visit adapted to the children.
We will start our activity in an olive grove located in the municipality of Montbrió del Camp, 5 km from Riudecanyes. During the walk in the olive grove we will explain the secrets of the olive trees: their origin, their characteristics, we will see hundred-year-old olive trees and we will learn how to make the harvest. The guided walk is completed with games and activities in which children and adults participate. Next, we will go to Riudecanyes to visit Fruits of the Landscape Interpretation Centre, a space located in the old facilities of the Cooperative and which exhibits an old oil mill and a hydraulic press, as well as an exhibition and audiovisuals. Finally, we will make the tasting of bread with Escornalbou Extra Virgin Olive Oil and for those with a sweet tooth, the sweet version: bread with oil and sugar.
